June and Carole,
Delighted to hear you are finding the book helpful!

As far as letting the paint dry before the gel goes on, it usually is dry by the time I am ready to apply gel. If it will not hurt to smudge the underlying paint somewhat I will apply the gel even when the paint is wet. This works best in broad areas of underpainting mostly one color. A highly detailed small area could be quite damaged that way.

Just play with it and see what works for you and what you are painting. The wonderful thing about acrylics is if you do not like what you did you can paint right over it again after it dries. So you can remedy problems you accidentally create.

Have fun!

Hi Lexi: I have just purchased your book from "Northlight Books" I am a watercolor artist who would like to paint with acrylics, but realize how different the process is. As I read your book, and loved your beautiful flowers, I have a question about applying the gel. Do you allow the initial layer of paint to dry before applying the gel, or do you apply the gel while the first layer of paint is still wet? I can't wait to begin, as I've purchased all the supplies, and would appreciate your comments on this. Thanks, for a beautiful introduction to acrylics. June

I just love your book...thanks so much!!!

I took drawing and color theory classes 3 years ago, and have been teaching myself acrylic painting (with books and tapes) the past couple years and not really liking anything I have done...I needed the "extras" you have added to your book that others did not have, such as the up close details. The biggest problem that I had, now that I have studied your book is that I was trying to make all my beautiful petals smooth and over painted until I lost that glow... texture is key.

Lexi....I know I left another note on another page, but just wanted to say after seeing your book, that I have painted flowers for years, but my media is a mixed media of pen & ink and gouche/watercolor. I am now wanting to get out my acrylics and buy your book and go to work on some new paintings. What an inspiration. Again, Congradulations.
